University system
The Canadian system combines academic excellence with a research-oriented approach, across a wide variety of institutions and programs.
Universities offer broad programs, from arts and sciences to business, engineering, and medicine. Colleges focus on professional and technical programs.
Canadian universities place strong emphasis on research. Master's and PhD programs are particularly research-oriented and often require a thesis.
Each course is assigned a number of credits. Students must accumulate a specific total to graduate, with significant flexibility in choices.
Types of programs
The Bachelor's Degree is prepared over 3 or 4 years at universities or university colleges. Each institution sets its own admission requirements.
Community colleges, technical institutes, and CEGEPs award diplomas and certificates — general or technical DEC, equivalent to French BTS or DUT — enabling immediate entry into the job market.
Short-duration programs (one term) worth 9 to 18 credits. Ideal to specialize or complement an existing program.
